Internship Overview

In the spring of 2024, I had the opportunity to intern at two postes de santé in Dakar, Senegal. This paper highlights my experiences in both the public and private healthcare sectors in Senegal, integrating my personal observations with insights into the national healthcare system, patient interactions, medical staff, and cultural differences. I explore the distinctions between public and private healthcare in a developing country, focusing on their health implications, financial disparities, and cultural influences.

Writing this paper challenged me to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of a developing healthcare system, reflect on my own experiences with patient care, and expand my understanding of cultural and language barriers. I will apply these newly acquired skills and research insights when working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and advocating for equitable access to quality care.
